Explorations - Mixed Media on Yupo

Solitary Kiger, 9" x 12" Mixed Media on Yupo
Isn't it a great feeling to feel re-invigorated in the studio? I was feeling in somewhat of a slump and decided it was time to change gears and try something new. I looked around my studio to see what materials I'd collected over the years and found a pad of Yupo paper. I bought it years ago when I did a tutorial on alcohol inks. The wheels started turning - how will this paper handle mixed media approaches? Time for some experimentation 😊
So what is Yupo anyway?? I will save you the google search and give you the brief explanation:
" Yupo is a synthetic, tree-free, and waterproof paper made from 100% polypropylene Unlike traditional papers that absorb media, its ultra-smooth, non-porous surface causes paints and inks to sit on top, creating unique and vibrant effects. "
It is very slippery - like a slippy slide for your paints! I I began with a graphite sketch, then applied a thinned coat of oil paint to reduce the consistency. Some adhered, while other bits dripped. I scratched back a few areas in the mane and tail using a wooden skewer. The scratches took me back to the surface below - adding some unique textural elements. My handy scraper tool wiped off a few other areas, followed by q-tips dipped in solvent to further define the form.

Then came in the addition of thicker pigment in oil paint. I was surprised at how quickly, the surface was starting to set up. Yet it is forgiving, because I could still remove and adjust an area by applying solvent. I kept working - quickly, to keep the spontaneity of my brushwork. I was able to keep digging back using scrapers and removing paint to further define the form as needed.

Building up layers and allow the surface to show off my unique marks.

I gradually introduced cold wax medium with my oil pigment - feeling the need to quiet some areas and give the viewers eye a place to rest. The background became smoother, but still retained depth because of the cold wax and translucent surface.
I love the freshness of this work. The stallion shows purpose - true from the field when I met him, yet he's presented in my own unique way.
