Solitary Kiger - Original Art

Solitary Kiger, 9" x 12" Mixed Media on Yupo, Mounted to Masonite, unframed. Oil, Cold Wax Medium, Graphite, Stabillo 

What is Yupo?? Yupo is waterproof synthetic paper. It is ultra-smooth and somewhat slippery. This surface is a new and exciting discovery for me. Thinned oil paint sits on top of the surface until enough tooth is built up in layers, unexpected drips happen and are wanted. The smooth surface allows me to model my equine form by adding and removing paint with various tools - an exciting dance until the figure is formed. 

Solitary is inspired from this summer's Kiger Valley ride to see Oregon's wild Kigers. This was a lone bachelor stallion (same horse as Restless), hanging on the outskirts of a larger herd. 

I used multiple glazes with transparent oil colour to achieve a glowing effect. Close up you will see my reductive techniques, and hints of my initial sketch. I enjoying allowing the history of the process to come through. I resisted the urge to layer more colour into this painting, allowing a monochromatic sepia and umber theme to shine.
