Kiger Ladies - Original Art

Kiger Ladies, 9" x 12" Mixed Media on Yupo, Mounted to Acid Free Gator Board, unframed. Oil, Cold Wax Medium, Graphite, Stabillo 

What is Yupo?? Yupo is waterproof synthetic paper. It is ultra-smooth and somewhat slippery. This surface is a new and exciting discovery for me. Thinned oil paint sits on top of the surface until enough tooth is built up in layers, unexpected drips happen and are wanted. The smooth surface allows me to model my equine form by adding and removing paint with various tools - an exciting dance until the figure is formed. 

Kiger Ladies are a pair of young Mares from this summer's Kiger Valley ride to see Oregon's wild Kiger Mustangs. This pair was alert, yet curious about our horses as we approached the herd. Close up you will see my reductive techniques, and hints of my initial sketch. I enjoying allowing the history of the process to come through. Hints of mauve appear, reminiscent of the wild flowers blooming at the time of our visit.
