The statement that accompanies this piece is as follows:
As an artist, I have dedicated myself to the subject that inspires me most, the equine form. I am drawn to the lines in a horse’s conformation; fluid, angular, curvaceous and graceful. My process always begins in the field. The wild horses of Oregon’s South Steens are frequent muses. The silence in the high desert centers my mind from the distractions of the city. The sun is high and the scent of sagebrush in the wind carries across the landscape in the heat of the day. The only sounds to be heard are the breath of the horses when I find them. I take in the atmosphere and the mood of each moment. Sometimes when different band families cross paths there is conflict, other times there is peace.
Once back in my studio, I cover the walls with field notes, photographs, and studies. As I am creating, I explore ideas on how I can expand and accentuate my experience. I often rely on simple stoic poses and find my way to express these poses uniquely. The process of cold wax medium captures my memories within its many layers. I know each artwork is complete when the story that I have woven with paint and wax conjures the visceral recollection of my time spent in the field with each horse.
