Doing so creates something different for the artist to respond to.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis painting was once a cantering horse, then it was a cantering pegasus, then realizing the legs were not cooperating, I brayered over the entire lower half, and gently I found another form – a strong, stoic white horse emerged, one that belonged and wanted to be there all along. It was a memorable a-ha moment in the studio. During my visit the sky was hazy from California fires burning south. It was getting close to midday, I was feeling the summer heat rising. I contemplated giving up on finding horses. Instead, I decided to take a small dusty road off the main path and see what I could find. I was pleasantly surprised to discover two horses grazing in a big open field. One mare, one stallion. Despite my great distance, I could tell these horses were not accustomed to seeing people. The stallion was very attuned to where I was. Slowly and carefully I maneuvered around my car with my tripod and notebook. I didn't want to scare or disturb. It's these quiet moments where I feel like it's a great gift to be able to have a window to watch, but not intrude. I worked quickly and didn't stay too long so they could enjoy their grasses in the summer sun. Sprinkled in between those days are a few Alla Prima sessions, where I aim to complete one painting on that particular day. There is also usually a painting that sits longer. I work on it sporadically; when I have some extra paint on my palette, or perhaps I'm experimenting with an idea. Such is the case with this, Two Geldings painting. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOriginally I started tight and thought the horses would be represented classically, however as I kept evolving through ideas, the traditional way just seemed – boring. Once the horses were marked in I created a paper mask to protect the figures and started laying in shapes, textures and colour in cold wax, crayons and oil bars. Then I ripped up some papers and old newsprint and layered them in the cold wax too. This completely disrupted the image the way I wanted. Then, uncovering the mask I worked the horses into the disruption. He was being chased by the waterhole by a group of stallions who had one mare amongst their herd. Handsome Spirit made a few attempts to lure her in his direction, but the gang was having no part of it. Spirit did not end up successful in the end. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis painting is a combination of Oil and Cold wax medium. The wax helped to create the dust stirred up in the event. The sides of the panel are painted the same midnight blue as the background. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs a side note I did see photos of Spirit in the herd photos at Burns BLM facility. This particular moment when the mustang pair stood in the distance to evaluate our approach. It was mid-morning, but was already heating up. The palomino just glowed in the sun. While I wanted to take photos, the horses were so spectacular, that I had to stop shooting just to watch them as well. It was evident they were very wild, because of the curiousity, and timidness they displayed. The palomino was not only, well muscled, but cute. I feel successful in capturing his expression. When I am out in the field, I often put my camera down to just watch the horses. I like to think I am etching these visuals in to memory.
